LILY Letter 70: Getting Toxic Out of You and Your Life

August 9, 2022

President Ezra Taft Benson famously said, "The Lord works from the inside out. The world works from the outside in. The world would take people out of the slums. Christ would take the slums out of people, and then they would take themselves out of the slums." We want to emphasize that toxicity finds a home within us. It is one thing to take yourself out of a toxic relationship and quite another to take that toxic relationship out of you.

As we allow Christ to help us take toxic feelings out of us, we are in a better position to take ourselves out of toxic relationships and refrain from engaging in toxic interactions. As this title suggests, if we first focus on getting toxic out of us, then we can work on getting toxic out of our life (which happens quite naturally when the toxic is out of us). To take emotional toxins out, forgive and consciously adopt the thought that it no longer matters who was right. Choose to radically accept whatever happened and be willing to move forward with faith.

While we believe that focusing on taking the toxic thinking and feelings out of our own selves comes first, in extreme cases, sometimes it has to work the other way around. It may take a great amount of divine help to let go of a toxic partnership first, but that can ultimately put us in a healthier atmosphere so that we can be successful in getting that toxic partnership out of us.

It is possible to live life without toxic interactions. When we are intentional about creating a life full of love, goodness, and choose to focus on building sincere and genuinely loving relationships, the toxicity in this world that still exists simply passes us by and we are no longer caught up in it and we are better for it. There will still be toxic people and interactions but we don't have to be a part of them.
